Ad Quality Rules

Prev Next

Publisher Ad Quality Rules can only be created and edited by Organization Administrators.

Publisher Ad Quality Rules can be applied to On-Demand, Live Streaming, or Podcast content, and apply to both direct and programmatic. Programmatic can include additional programmatic-specific ad quality rules as described in Programmatic Ad Quality.

Be aware that creating ad quality rules can affect delivery of advertising campaigns. Use with caution.

Publisher Ad Quality and Programmatic Ad Quality

Your publisher ad quality settings (from TAP Settings > Publisher > Ad Quality) are used for direct advertising in TAP, and they serve as a starting point for programmatic advertising in TAP Programmatic. Think of them as your baseline ad quality settings.

Additional ad quality rules can be applied for programmatic advertising (from TAP Settings > Programmatic > Prog. Ad quality). These rules are additive, meaning you cannot undo or override rules from your baseline ad quality settings; programmatic ad quality rules are in addition to your baseline ad quality rules.

Use ad quality rules to block ads of specified IAB categories from appearing in your ad breaks. For example, if your want to block ads for alcohol from a podcast whose target audience is children, you can create an ad quality rule that blocks IAB8-5 (Cocktails/Beer), IAB8-18 (Wine), and IAB8-23 (Night Clubs/Bars) and then target your podcast with that rule.

  • You can create multiple ad quality rules.

  • You can target multiple stations/podcasts with a single ad quality rule.

  • A single station/podcast can be targeted by multiple ad quality rules.

  • Ad quality rules can be accounted for in forecasting.

Creating an Ad Quality Rule

Publisher ad quality rules are created in TAP Settings, on the Publisher > Ad quality tab. The process of creating Programmatic ad quality rules (Publisher > Programmatic > Prog. Ad quality) is essentially the same.

  1. Create a new Ad quality rule.

  2. List of existing rules. The columns in the rules list include descriptive information such as the rule name, exclusions, and targeting rules. You might need to scroll to the right to see all of the columns

  3. Customize columns.

  4. Options menu.

To create an Ad Quality rule:

  1. Click + New ad quality rule.

  2. On the New Ad Quality Rule page, enter a name for the rule.

  3. Select the IAB categories that you wish to block from advertising on your station/podcast.
Note: selecting a Tier-1 category (such as "IAB1: Arts & Entertainment") does not include the subcategories of IAB1, If you want to include the subcategories, you must select them too.
Note: select All categories to block all ads. Use this to create an ad-free podcast.
At this point you can save the rule without targeting any stations/podcasts. If you choose this option you should save the rule as a draft; otherwise all stations/podcasts will be targeted by the rule. (You must select Create as Draft before you save the rule; once the rule is saved as Active it cannot be changed to "Draft.")
As a best practice, you should continue by going to the Targeting section and select the stations/podcasts you wish to target before you save the rule.

  4. In the Targeting section, click Create content targeting rule.

  5. In the Add content targeting rule screen that appears, select the stations/podcasts that you wish to target with the ad quality rule. You can select multiple items.

  6. Click Add rules. Alternatively, click Add rules and create another content targeting rule to apply this rule to another station/podcast or set of stations/podcasts.
