Q&A Omny Studio

Office Hours and Webinar Q&A transcripts are lightly edited for clarity and brevity and are presented here for your convenience and to ensure the answers to important questions are shared. Answers are accurate at the time they are transcribed and presented, but due to on-going feature development and continuous improvements, some answers might be out of date when you read them. If there is a conflict between a Q&A answer and the related user guide, the user guide takes precedence.

Below is a selection of questions and answers captured during Omny Studio Office Hours sessions and Wednesday Webinars. Newer items are at the top.

Question

Answer

If I change the title of my podcast, how do I make sure the old title does not show up in the RSS feed? And will changing the title affect my SEO?

The only way the RSS feed would have the title is if you use omnyfm page. People do not usually see the RSS feed, so SEO will not be affected.

Regarding "Downloads" and "consumption," how do I interpret these?

Omny Studio is IAB compliant, so all downloads are filtered accordingly.

Consumption data is recorded only if we control the player, which is why this is possible for Omny FM, embeds, and any publisher apps/sites using our consumption API. (See this article and this article.)

Spotify and Apple do not send us back player data, which is why they don’t appear in Omny. Consumption on those platforms is specific to each player and should be interpreted carefully.

Regarding analytics at clip level, what is the difference between Podcast and Embedded player?

Podcast constitutes all of your RSS based downloads, whereas embedded players is data direct from the player embedded on a website.

Will Omny Studio move more towards video podcasting?

Short answer: Neither Omny nor TAP (or any of Triton’s systems) handle video. Video hosting and distribution is totally different from audio (for the same reason that a video CMS, like Brightcove, doesn’t do audio).

Slightly longer answer: Podcast delivery is all done by RSS, and RSS does not allow for video ad insertion or distribution natively. The apps that have chosen to offer video (YouTube, Spotify, etc.) have done so outside of the RSS method, meaning there is no link back to analytics or ad insertion.

Some video-oriented offerings we do have:

It is important to note that because the methods described above do not use RSS, dynamic ad insertion and analytics do not flow back natively.

Regarding Google Podcast and YouTube, how can we determine where the listener is listening from (Google Podcast or Youtube)?

RSS downloads from YouTube Music appear in the Player section of Omny Studio analytics.

Note: With the sunsetting of Google Podcasts, podcast listeners will have the option to migrate their shows to YouTube Music. If they choose to do this, downloads will appear from those listeners.

However, as Google will not be migrating shows themselves, most podcasts on YouTube Music are expected to be cached versions created by YouTube from shows published on the main YouTube site. Because of this, downloads reported by Omny Studio for YouTube Music may not align with your historical download metrics from Google Podcasts. More information is available here.

Will users on Google smart speakers be affected by Google changes (Google podcast to YouTube Music)?

Google has informed us that plays from Google smart speakers will be from Spotify’s library of content. We will update our users as we learn more. In the meantime, you can consult this Omny Help article, which we will update as more information is disclosed to us.

What's the best way to use Omny playlists?

Playlists allow you to curate different selections of your content for your audience, providing different listening experiences. Each playlist has its own RSS feed. Further details are available here.

Can you recommend a proven method to drive traffic to RSS feeds?

Use tags to customize the metadata of clips and playlists to help drive traffic to your feeds.

Podnews can be used to see where our feeds are distributed. Will this feature be available within Omny Studio?

Yes, it is in our roadmap but we do not have development or delivery dates yet.

Is there a shortcut for users to search and upload photos/pictures without leaving the platform?

No. For copyright reasons we do not have an image search function or integrations.

Is there a way to track podcast episode listening duration?

This is challenging because methodologies for measuring listeners and downloads is fragmented within the industry. The standardized measurement is download. When you use pages or embedded players you have more control over the player than when using Spotify or Apple Podcast. However, you will not be able to see total time listening for all your downloads because Omny is just a portion of the overall distribution network. This is an industry-wide challenge. A suggestion would be to identify where the bulk of your downloads come from, and use the duration data from that to extrapolate what the Apple and/or Spotify data indicates.

We do a lot of feed drops. How can we pull a single clip across multiple channels?

To put a single clip across multiple channels use cross program, playlist sharing. More information can be found here.

How can I view the scheduled dates of all of my clips without having to go into each individual clip?

Currently, you can view the scheduled date on the main Clips page by hovering over the Publish icon. Scheduled clips that are added to playlists will also appear on the Playlist page in Omny. We have discussed this internally and agree it is something we would like improve in a future version.

How do I use chapter markers, and would they help our SEO?

When you have a very long audio clip you can break it down into chapters for an itemized listening experience. This allows listeners to navigate quickly between the chapters. It has no effect on SEO.

Can we have a sneak peek of what’s coming up in the coming months?

Some of the things we are working on for later in 2024 include:

  • New UI in Beta

  • Creative upload functionality (Omny/TAP)

  • SSO

  • Chapter markers image support (Omny > YouTube)

  • Brand safety/Contextual targeting with Sounder

  • Forklifting a program from one org to another without the loss of analytics

We get frequent alerts of lost connection to Omny, then a few minutes later we get other notifications that connection is back. Does this have any effect on the actual recording function?

No. Our recording agent alerting system is extremely sensitive. The product team is working on making it slightly less sensitive to prevent false positive and annoying notifications.

Currently recording is 128k mp3. Can we have better?

Yes! We offer higher quality recording; however it requires a change in your contract and comes with a higher delivery cost.

How does the integration with YouTube work?

See this Omny Help article.

When migrating podcasts to Omny Studio from another CMS, does the historical data transfer to Omny as well?

Unfortunately, no. Migration is done via RSS feed, and analytics are not part of the feed. Our recommendation is to export all data from your original CMS before migrating. Do note that each platform could be measuring data differently, so it is not always "apples to apples." At Omny Studio we are IAB compliant for podcast measurement.

If a listener wants to download an old episode which was published before migrating to Omny, will they be able to?

Yes. Once you migrate, all your feeds are moved to Omny including your back catalog.

Looking at analytics, the lifetime numbers are different than the downloads. Is that expected, and if so why?

They should be the same. If they are not, submit a ticket to our Support team: supportdesk@tritondigital.com

What is the difference between downloads and estimated uniques?

Downloads are the total downloads, while the estimated uniques are the amount of individual connections that we saw download the episode. (Listeners are identified by a combination of IP address and user agent in accordance with the IAB filtering rules described in the IAB Podcast Measurement Technical Guidelines v2.1. )

Do you have a section for training videos on analytics?

We have a series of help articles which you can consult here. Not all are videos, but most will contain comprehensive screenshots or animated screenshots

What could explain a sudden drop in my downloads, and how can I improve downloads?

A sudden drop in downloads could be attributed to several factors:

  • Natural trend of the podcast

  • Apple and the recent change in iOS (iOS 17)

  • Google podcast moving to YouTube

  • If you recently migrated to Omny, Spotify sees the "URLs" as new and re-download to the followers. This will cause a big spike in your data, to then  go back to normal. In this case, it is not so much a decrease in downloads as an artificial increase by Spotify. More information here.

If you use Podcast Metrics you could see where this drop is coming from by breaking down your report by player.
