Methodologies Used by Triton Digital

Triton Digital Webcast Metrics performs census-based internet audio streaming traffic and audience measurement and supports two different methods to get audio session information:

  • The Listener Tracking (LT) service is for publishers who have significant control over their players from a code standpoint.  It is a client-side measurement method in which the player makes ongoing HTTPS calls to a tracking API.  In practice, this method applies most often on interactive, on-demand players where media is selected/download/played sequentially.
  • The Log Collection (LC) method is for publishers on live streams (where a streaming server has a record of the exact starting/ending points of each session) or where player-side code is not an option. It is a server-side measurement method.

Both methodologies provide accurate and complete measurement as long as they are properly implemented and all the traffic is measured.

Listener Tracking Methodology

The Listener Tracker (LT) service allows pure play or on-demand type of audio listening to be measured from the client application/web player. It is an accurate way to measure any type of audio listening, including live streaming. It can be used on web players and applications developed or influenced by the publisher, where code can be added to call the tracking API.

The LT API documentation is available here: TritonDigital-LT-API.pdf

Please contact the Triton Digital Solution Specialist team before implementing an LT solution.

Log Collection Methodology & Requirements

The Log Collection service fetches server logs from a streaming CDN (Content Delivery Network) and parses/filters/enriches the data to be analyzed by Webcast Metrics. It is an accurate way to measure any type of live-stream audio listening where the player connects to a stream and holds a connection continuously for the duration of play.  The LC Method is perfectly suited for publishers who serve live-stream content to third-party players, such as TuneIn or iTunes, as well as their own players, or to OTT devices like smart speakers or in-dash players in cars.

If you choose this method, your Triton Digital Client Success Manager will need some additional information for implementation, such as the location and credentials of an FTP/SFTP where Triton Digital can pick up the logs, and the type of streaming server/log format to expect. Providing a small sample of actual logs can help speed up the process as well.

Triton Streaming (CDN) clients automatically have this methodology enabled as part of Webcast Metrics, and do not need to take any special measures to provide logs.
