Integrating your podcast CMS and monetizing with Triton Digital

The Triton Digital podcast service is a content delivery network (CDN) and ad server combined into a single platform to dynamically stitch pre-roll, mid-roll, and post-roll audio ads directly into podcast episodes. You can target multiple podcasts with a single campaign, or run multiple campaigns on a single podcast. Results can be measured in the Podcast Metrics analytics tool from Triton Digital.

The service's content management system (CMS) is provided by Omny Studio, but it can be integrated into other CMS systems as well.

This article is intended for podcast producers who wish to migrate their podcast to the Triton Digital podcast service by integrating their existing CMS. It includes optional technical details on how to edit your podcast files' metadata to set the timing for mid-roll ad breaks and to customize the number of pre-roll and post-roll ads, as well as how to customize the timing of pre-roll and mid-roll ads. For information about impressions measurement see the Podcast Metrics section of the Triton Metrics User Guide.

Migrating Your Podcast to Triton Services

To benefit from the Triton Podcast Service, you’ll have to integrate with Triton Digital according to one of the following models:

  1. Customize your CMS to integrate Triton’s solution. Triton will work with you, and provide technical documentation for you or your third-party CMS provider to make the appropriate changes to support Triton’s Podcast Services. If you are interested in this avenue, please contact a Triton Digital solution specialist.
  2. Manage your podcasts through Omny Studio. Omny Studio offers a complete audio management platform. It’s an all-in-one audio capture, storage, editing and analytics solution, built for radio and podcasters. For more information, please contact Triton Digital, or speak with your Triton Digital Client Success Manager, or go to http://help.omnystudio.com.
  3. Integrate as an RSS proxy over your existing feed. This integration mode will work only with players that are getting the episodes list from an RSS feed. Note that very few Web pages are built like this, so it may not be suitable to monetize every download. However, it might be interesting as a quick first step if neither of the above options are possible, or if the goal is to monetize on a third-party channel and not on the publisher web site. If you prefer to go with this option you need to provide your RSS feed to Triton. Note that this is also the only integration option if you are using one of these Podcasting Tools:
    • SoundCloud
    • Libsyn

RSS Feed Information

In the migration process, you will be asked to provide your podcast RSS feed.

The following RSS feed information is required by Triton Digital to improve the quality of our services:

  • Pre-fetch podcast episodes on our file servers
  • Enhanced episode information for analytics (such as title and release dates)
  • The RSS proxy option (this is optional, as described in Migrating Your Podcast to Triton Services)

The RSS feed is preferred, but not mandatory. So if you do not publish an RSS feed for your show/podcast we can still stitch ads into your audio shows.

Audio Encoding Information

The bit rate, frequency, and channel mode must stay the same through the duration of the podcast file in order to avoid player issues. In the migration process, you will be asked to provide the following podcast audio encoding information to Triton Digital:

  • Codec (MP3/AAC). Currently only supports MP3.
  • Bit rate.
  • Rate Control Mode. Must be CBR.
  • Sample rate (11.025, 22.05, 44.1KHz).
  • Channels (1 or 2; i.e., mono or stereo).
  • Volume normalization R128 level (LUFS).

Note: variable bitrate (VBR) MP3 files are not supported; use constant bitrate (CBR) MP3 files.

You must use Triton Digital's transcoding option if:

  • You can’t produce all podcast episodes to the same settings (as declared in the migration process);
  • You have existing episodes that were processed using different settings. This is required if you want to stitch ads into downloads of non-matching episodes that already exist.

Volume normalization is preferred to ensure a good listening experience in the podcast-to-ads transition. If you can ensure that your ad creatives and your podcast episodes are always recorded at the same normalized level, you may not need this. If you are producing a volume-normalized show, but do not have full control of the ads’ volume normalization, we can normalize the ads for you. If you don’t control any of these, you may elect to use our transcoding option, which can normalize both the episodes and the ads for a better listening experience.

Using Podtrac

Podtrac offers measurement solutions for podcasters. If you currently use Podtrac and wish to continue using it to track your downloads for each show and episode, you must enable Podtrac measurement on your podcast. Do this by adding a URL prefix (podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp3) in front of the current enclosure url.

For example, if an original file URL is:
https://www.CustomerXYZ.com/AllMyPodcastfiles/aabbcc/OneOfMyFiles.mp3

... to enable monetization with Triton Digital without Podtrac, the URL would become:
https://1234.mc.tritondigital.com/PODCAST123/media/aabbcc/OneOfMyFiles.mp3

...and to add Podtrac Measurement on top of this, the final (public) URL will be:
https://podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp3/1234.mc.tritondigital.com/PODCAST123/media/aabbcc/OneOfMyFiles.mp3

In this case the audio player will first reach the Podtrac servers, which then re-direct to Triton servers, from which the audio file is delivered.

(In the example above, 1234.mc.tritondigital.com/PODCAST123 is an example of the Triton URL. Your actual URL will differ slightly.)

Tap Migration

Triton Ad Platform (TAP) is an advertising and campaign management platform. It lets you create, manage, and place commercial and non-commercial advertising, target ads widely or narrowly, and accurately track spots and impressions in order to generate billing reports and affidavits based on actual performance data.

If you are new to TAP, you should be registered with to receive training on TAP. If you have not received your confirmation of registration, contact contact Customer Support.

For more information, see the TAP User Guide.

Metadata Edits

You will need to make metadata edits to your podcasts' MP3 files in order to set the timing for mid-roll ad injection, and to configure pre- and post-roll ad insertion that is outside of the defaut "one ad before and one ad after" configuration (for example, to include two or three pre- or post-rolls, or to change their timings).

For more information, see this companion article: Mid-roll Timing and Other Metadata Edits for Podcasting.
