Content Targeting and Content Access

Important!

The Content Delivery radio buttons in the flight's content targeting section indicate the default setting for content targeting when you create a new flight. The behavior of these radio buttons changes depending on the user's content access rights, the presence of content tags, and whether or not you have selected specific content for targeting. See below for details.

The default behavior for all-content delivery is set by the organization administrator in TAP Settings.

Understanding Content Targeting Radio Buttons

The content delivery radio buttons serve as an indicator of the default setting for content delivery when you create a new flight:

  • When All [Organization] stations/podcasts is pre-selected on a new flight, it means the default behavior for new flights is to deliver to all stations/podcasts, unless the person creating the flight only has limited content access permissions.

  • When Only targeted stations/podcasts is pre-selected on a new flight, it means the default behavior for new flights is to not deliver to any stations/podcasts until some or all stations/podcasts are selected for targeting.

  1. All [Organization] stations/podcasts is selected, so flight is eligible to deliver to all stations/podcasts. (For an exception, see When "All" does not really mean "All" below.)

  2. Only targeted stations/podcasts is selected, so flight will only deliver to selected stations/podcasts. Note that you need to select one or more stations/podcasts as a Content targeting rule.

When creating a flight (or editing an existing flight), the changes you can make to content targeting depends on your content access permissions. Specifically:

  • If you have all content access permission, you can:

    • Switch between All [Organization] stations/podcasts and Only targeted stations/podcasts in either direction.

    • Select any station or podcast for targeting.

  • If you have limited content access permission, you can:

    • Select stations and podcasts (those that you have access to) for targeting, even when All [Organization] stations/podcastsis pre-selected on a new flight.

      • When you select stations or podcasts for targeting, the toggle status switches to Only targeted stations/podcasts.

  • If you have limited content access permissions, you cannot:

    • Switch from Only targeted stations/podcasts to All [Organization] stations/podcasts. However, regardless of which radio button is selected, you can only target the stations and podcasts that you have access to.

Understanding Content Delivery Options and Behavior

Content delivery options are set in TAP Settings by the TAP organization administrator.

All-content delivery options

  • All content delivery by default. When the flight is created, it is set to deliver to all of the stations/podcasts in the organization, unless you add specific content targeting rules.

    • Note that "All content" depends on the delivery method selected. For example, if you select Podcast as the only delivery method in the flight, then all podcasts in the organization are targeted for delivery.

    • All content delivery must be enabled in order to use content tags. As a result, limited content access users cannot apply content tag or station tag targeting to their flights.

  • No content delivery by default. When the flight is created, no stations/podcasts are selected for delivery. You must select the stations/podcasts that you want the flight to deliver to by creating a content targeting rule.

All-content delivery behavior

The behavior for all content delivery changes depending on if the user has access to all stations/podcasts in the network ("all content access") or if they have limited access to only some stations/podcasts in the network ("limited content access").

  • All content access: user has access to all of the publisher's stations/podcasts.

  • Limited content access: user only has access to stations/podcasts as specified in the CAC section of the User Management application.

A TAP user can check their content access status by opening the User/Organization menu:

If all-content delivery is NOT selected as the default in Organization Settings:

  • New flights created by all users are set for no content delivery by default. The Only targeted stations/podcasts radio button is selected in the flight. However, when the flight is first created, no stations/podcasts will be selected, so a warning message appears; the user must go into Content Targeting and select stations/podcasts to target.

  • If the user has all content access:

    • They have the option of selecting the All [Organization] stations/podcasts radio button, thereby targeting all content. (Exception: if a specific delivery method was selected for the flight, all content of that delivery method only is targeted.)

    • Alternatively, they can create a content targeting rule to target specific stations/podcasts.

  • If the user has limited content access:

    • They cannot select the All [Organization] stations/podcasts radio button. They must create a content targeting rule to target specific stations/podcasts; otherwise the flight will not deliver.

If all-content delivery is selected as the default in Organization Settings:

  • If the user has all content access:

    • New flights are set for all-content delivery by default. (Exception: if a specific delivery method was selected for the flight, all content of that delivery method only is targeted.)

    • The user has the option of creating content targeting rules to instead target specific stations/podcasts.

  • If the user has limited content access:

    • New flights are set for no content delivery by default. In this case, no stations/podcasts are targeted, so flights will not deliver unless the user goes into Content Targeting and creates a rule to target specific stations/podcasts.

If a limited content access user edits a flight created by an all content access user:

  • The limited content access user can create a targeting rule that targets specific stations/podcasts, which will set the toggle status to Only targeted stations/podcasts. However, they cannot re-select the All [Organization] stations/podcasts radio button for a flight that was created by an all content access user.

  • The limited content access user can also edit other aspects of the flight, such as the impressions goal, pacing, end date, etc., as long as the edits do not change the station/podcast targeting.

When "All" does not really mean "All"

In some cases, All [Organization] stations/podcasts can be selected even when not all stations/podcasts are actually targeted. Typically this happens when the trafficker creates a content targeting rule that limits the targeting to less than "all" stations/podcasts (which sets the toggle to Only targeted stations/podcasts), and then the trafficker – or someone else – re-selects All [Organization] stations/podcasts.

In this case, the resetting of the toggle does not remove or change the content targeting rule. As a result, the information in the Content Targeting section appears to be contradictory.

Triton Digital recommends you do not re-select All [Organization] stations/podcasts when you also use content targeting rules.

  1. "All [Organization] stations/podcasts" is selected, which appears to contradict the presence of a rule targeting a specific podcast.

  2. If a Content targeting rule like this one exists, and "All [Organization] stations/podcasts" is also selected, the flight will obey the content targeting rule. Switching the toggle does not affect existing content targeting rules.

More Information

For information about copying flights, see Copying an "All Content Access" Flight as a "Limited Content Access" User.

There are other possible ways that the Organization Delivery Indicator can appear with or without targeting rules, as described below.

Some other possible content targeting combinations (click to expand):

"Only targeted stations/podcasts" selected, one station/podcast targeted for exclusion

  • In this case, no specific stations and podcasts are selected for targeting, and one podcast is selected for exclusion.

  • Result: no stations or podcasts are targeted. In this case the exclusion rule is redundant because no content is included.

"All [Organization] stations/podcasts" selected, one station/podcast targeted for exclusion

  • In this case, All [Organization] stations/podcasts is selected, indicating that all content access is the default setting or it has been selected by a user with all content access.

  • One podcast is targeted for exclusion via content targeting rule.

  • Result: delivery to all content except the one targeted by the exclusion rule.
