Targeting Omny Ad Break Markers

Prev Next

You can add custom content tags to Omny ad break markers, which enables Content tag targeting in TAP.

To create a content tag in Omny Studio:

  1. Choose a break marker. (In this example a pre-roll marker is used.)

  2. Click "Edit" from the marker’s Options menu.

  3. Enter a tag and press Enter on your keyboard to set the tag in the tag field.

  4. Click "Save changes."

  5. Result: content tag is created and visible in the user interface.

Targeting Omny Mid-rolls

The markers described below are called "Ad Markers" In the Omny UI (user interface). However, they are really ad break markers, as they mark the break, not specific ads within a break. This user guide refers to them as ad break markers.

In Omny Studio you can insert mid-roll ad break markers into your podcasts to indicate where mid-roll ad breaks should be inserted. Those break markers automatically create invisible ad break marker tags, which can be used by TAP's content tags targeting feature to target flights directly to those markers.

When targeting Omny ad break marker tags in TAP you can be as granular as you wish. You can:

  • Target an entire podcast, plus one or more ad break marker tags; any episode of that podcast that contains those exact tags are targeted.

  • Target a podcast publish date or age, plus one or more ad break marker tags; any episode of that podcast that falls within the defined date range and contains those exact tags are targeted.

  • Target a specific podcast episode, plus one or more ad break marker tags; that episode is targeted if it contains the break marker tags.

Unlike content tags, Omny ad break marker tags are not visible in the Omny UI (user interface). They are automatically generated when you add a mid-roll break in the Omny clip editor, but there is no indication in the UI that they are there. However, TAP sees them when you use content targeting to target by mid-roll position, where position refers to the position of the mid-roll within the episode, not position of ad within the break.

Usage Notes

  • Targeting a flight to an ad break marker does not prevent other flights from running at that marker.

  • When targeting the invisible ad break marker tags you must use the exact syntax of the tags!

    • The syntax for ascending order is:

      • midroll_pos_1 (first mid-roll in episode)

      • midroll_pos_2 (second mid-roll in episode)

      • midroll_pos_3 (third mid-roll in episode)

      • etc.

    • The syntax for descending order is:

      • midroll_pos_-1 (last mid-roll in episode)

      • midroll_pos_-2 (second-last mid-roll in episode)

      • midroll_pos_-3 (third-last mid-roll in episode)

      • etc.

  • To target an ad position within a specific mid-roll, create a targeting rule that targets both the mid-roll ad break marker tag AND the position-in-break.

Examples

Below are a few examples of how you can use TAP's Content targeting to target Omny ad break markers. These examples use the auto-generated ad marker tags.

To target two Omny Studio mid-roll ad break markers in a single episode:

This example involves adding two mid-roll ad markers in Omny, then creating two flights in TAP, where the first flight targets the first mid-roll marker and the section flight targets the second mid-roll marker.

Omny:

  1. In Omny Studio, go to the episode you wish to target and use the instructions in this article (Targeting specific mid-roll breaks in order of sequence) to insert two mid-roll ad markers.

  2. Get the Clip ID for the episode you want to target.

First flight, create two rules to target the first mid-roll position:

  3. In TAP, create a flight containing all the necessary details and the creative you want to use in the first mid-roll break.

  4. Go to the flight's targeting section and create rules to target the first mid-roll position in the episode.

  5. (Rule 1.) In Content targeting, click Add content targeting rule, then Episode ID, and enter the Clip ID of the episode you wish to target. Click Add value then click Add rules and create another content targeting rule.

  6. (Rule 2.) Select Content tag, and add the ad break marker tag for the first mid-roll (midroll_pos_1). Click Add rules.

  7. Save the flight.

  8. Make a copy of the flight without creative.

Second flight, add creative and modify rule to target second mid-roll:

  9. In the copied flight, add the creative for the second mid-roll.

  10. Click the "x" icon to remove the content tag rule.

  11. Click Add AND content targeting rule, then Content tag, and enter the ad break marker tag for the second mid-roll. Mark it as Include and click Add rules.

  12. Save the flight.

To target two Omny Studio mid-roll ad markers in a two-month range of previously-published episodes:

This example is the same as the one above, but it targets all episodes of a podcast that were published during the a two-month period of the current year. (For this example we're using March and April.) In this example you make three targeting rules per flight.

Omny:

  1. In Omny Studio, go to each of the episodes that were published in the target period (in this example, March and April 2021) and use the instructions in this article (Targeting specific mid-roll breaks in order of sequence) to insert two mid-roll ad markers into each episode.
    First flight, create three rules:

  2. In TAP, create a flight containing all the necessary details and the creative you want to use in the first mid-roll ad marker.

  3. Go to the flight's targeting section.

  4. (Rule 1.) In Content targeting, click Add content targeting rule, then Station/Podcast, and select the podcast you want to target (in this example, "Blork's Cat News"). Mark it as Include then click Add rules and create another content targeting rule.

  8. Save the flight.

  9. Make a copy of the flight without creative.
    Second flight:

  10. In the copied flight, add the creative for the second mid-roll.

  11. Click the "x" icon to remove the content tag rule.

  12. Click Add AND content targeting rule, then Content tag, and add the ad break marker tag for the second mid-roll. Save the rule.
