# Station Manager Glossary

| Term | Definition |
| --- | --- |
| Balance | Quantity of signals from each channel reproduced in a stereo audio recording. |
| Client | Desktop application that communicates with the server in order to display data. |
| Compressed format | File format in which an audio signal is compressed during the encoding process. |
| Cue point | A metadata signal that indicates streaming cues, such as when to insert ads and when to stop serving ads. |
| Encoding | Converting digital audio data into a given audio file format (MP3, AAC, etc.). |
| FLV | FLV is a Flash container file format that contains audio, video, or both, along with associated metadata. |
| Input levels | Set of adjustable controls for the audio device. |
| Installation directory | Specific physical location of the machine’s hard-drive in which the application is installed. |
| IP address | Numerical identification assigned to a device (computer, phone, iPod) in a network used for communication purposes. |
| Logs | Information on server or application activity, typically used for troubleshooting. Logs may contain error or warning messages, which can be relayed to the Triton Digital support team in case of a problem. |
| Metadata | Data that provides information about associated data. For an audio stream, its metadata contains information about the song played, artist, album, etc. |
| Mount | Logical representation of an audio stream in a given encoding format. Stations may have several different mounts, each delivering a different encoding format or quality of media. More mounts means more listening options for consumers. |
| mprv2 | Media Proxy Relay version 2. This is a Triton Digital custom communications protocol for data transfer between the Media Proxy and the Media Relay. |
| Port | Data connection used by programs to exchange data. |
| RAS | Radio Automation Software. Third-party metadata software that integrates with the broadcast feed to enable features such as ad placement and “now playing” information. |
| Server | Station-side component that provides data to the client and performs the streaming. |
| Sound device | Sound card of the machine used. Facilitates input and output of audio signals. |
| Station | A station is a representation on the Station Manager server that consists of parameters for encoding and handling metadata and provides the link from your media stream to the Triton Digital streaming network. |
| Streaming | Delivering content gradually to another instance (i.e. flash player, mobile, etc.). |
| Terrestrial broadcasting station | A traditional radio broadcaster with a studio and radio broadcast capabilities. |
| Web radio | A virtual radio station that broadcasts only on the internet. |
| XML file | Structured text file format used to store and share information in a consistent way. |
