A great way to extend the reach of your stations’ audience is to get them listed on some of the popular audio directories and listening apps. This article provides a few tips on getting listed.
iHeartRadio
You can apply to have your U.S.-based station listed in the iHeartRadio “Streamers Portal” directory. The iHeartRadio platform integrates with Amazon Alexa and Google Home.
To get your station(s) listed on iHeartRadio:
Go to the iHeart for Streamers “Adding your stream to iHeart” page.
Review the requirements and other information.
Click the link for
streamers.iheart.com
to access the application form.
Tunein
Tunein is a popular third-party directory for streaming radio stations and podcasts from around the world. It is integrated into several leading audio services such as Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Sonos, and Bose. By getting your stations listed on Tunein you are effectively adding them to those apps as well as any devices that can install the Tunein app.
To get your station(s) added to Tunein:
Create a Tunein account. (Go here and click “Sign up.”)
For U.S. stations, go here and fill out the form.
For non-US stations, use this Google Doc to apply for inclusion in the directory.
Wait for Tunein to reply (usually within a few days).
Audacy
Audacy (formerly Entercom) is a leading Internet radio and podcast platform. You can apply to have your U.S.-based station(s) listed on Audacy, which brings your audio to listeners who connect via the Audacy service and associated devices and apps.
To get your station(s) listed on Audacy:
Go to to the Audacy “Add Your Station” page.
Review the FAQs and then follow the “Submit Your Station” link.
Amazon Alexa
Amazon Alexa is a voice-activated personal assistant primarily used in Amazon’s line of smart speakers. If you are already listed on iHeart or Tunein then you are already included in the Alexa Skill (app) for those services and your station is available via voice commands in Alexa.
However, if you are not listed on those services, you can build your own custom Alexa Skill that plays your station on an Alexa smart speaker in response to a voice command. Amazon provides developer documentation on building Skills for Alexa:
If you don’t want to build the skill yourself, you can find third-party developers who can build it for you by doing a web search for “Alexa skills developer.”
